Nafplio: The First Capital of Greece

Nafplio is one of the most beautiful destinations in Argolis (eastern Peloponnese) and among the most romantic places in Greece. Once the first capital of the modern Greek state (1823–1834), Nafplio combines rich history with elegant architecture and a charming seaside atmosphere.

According to mythology, the city was founded by Nauplius, the son of Poseidon and Amymone. Its history stretches back to prehistoric times, with connections to legendary events such as the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War.

After a period of decline during Roman rule, Nafplio flourished again in the Byzantine era. Successive Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman rulers left a lasting imprint on the city, shaping its unique cultural identity, architecture, and traditions.
