7 Day Greece Through the Centuries Tour from Athens

Explore thousands of years of Greek history on this 7-day, 6-night guided tour from Athens through the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaloniki and ancient Macedonia. Visit Mycenae, Epidaurus, Ancient Olympia, Delphi, Meteora, Thessaloniki, Edessa, Mieza, Aigai (Vergina), Veria, Pella and Dion.

Day 1: Corinth Canal – Epidaurus – Nafplio – Mycenae – Olympia

Depart from Athens and travel toward the Peloponnese, following the coastal road to the Corinth Canal.

After a short stop, continue to the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus and visit the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, renowned for its harmonious design, exceptional preservation and acoustics.

Continue to Nafplio, where you will have a short stop in one of Greece’s most historic seaside cities.

The journey then continues to the Archaeological Site of Mycenae, one of the most important centers of the Mycenaean civilization.

Enter the fortified citadel through the monumental Lion Gate, see the massive Cyclopean Walls and explore the remains of this important Bronze Age center.

The visit also includes the Treasury of Atreus, an impressive Mycenaean tholos tomb traditionally known as the Tomb of Agamemnon.

After Mycenae, travel through Tripoli and Megalopolis to Olympia.

Day 2: Ancient Olympia – Rion-Antirion Bridge – Nafpaktos – Delphi

After breakfast, visit the Archaeological Site of Ancient Olympia, one of the most important religious and athletic centers of ancient Greece.

Olympia was the sanctuary of Zeus and the location of the ancient Olympic Games. The traditional date of the first recorded Olympic Games is 776 BC.

Explore the sanctuary, see the Ancient Stadium and visit the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, which preserves major sculptures and finds discovered at the site.

You will also see the area associated with the modern ceremony for the lighting of the Olympic Flame.

After the visit, travel through Elis and Achaea and cross the Corinthian Gulf via the impressive Rion-Antirion Bridge.

Continue past Nafpaktos, historically known as Lepanto, and Itea before arriving in Delphi.

Day 3: Delphi Archaeological Site & Museum – Kalambaka

After breakfast, visit the UNESCO-listed Delphi Archaeological Site, one of the most important religious centers of the ancient Greek world.

Ancient Greeks regarded Delphi as the center or “navel” of the world. The sanctuary was primarily dedicated to Apollo and became famous for the Oracle of Delphi, where the priestess Pythia delivered prophetic responses.

Walk along the Sacred Way and see important monuments including the Treasury of the Athenians and the Temple of Apollo.

Continue to the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, whose major exhibits include the Bronze Charioteer of Delphi, the Sphinx of Naxos and the statue of Antinous.

After the visit, travel north to Kalambaka, situated below the remarkable rock formations of Meteora.

Day 4: Meteora Monasteries – Tempi Valley – Mount Olympus – Thessaloniki

After breakfast, visit the UNESCO-listed Meteora Monasteries, one of Greece’s most distinctive cultural and religious landscapes.

Orthodox monastic communities developed among the towering rock formations over many centuries, creating monasteries on seemingly inaccessible sandstone pillars.

Visit selected monasteries and see examples of Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art, icons, frescoes and historic collections.

Leaving Kalambaka, travel across Thessaly and through the Tempi Valley. Along the route, see Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and the legendary home of the Olympian gods in ancient Greek mythology.

Continue north to Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city and one of the country’s major historical and cultural centers.

Day 5: Thessaloniki City Tour

After breakfast, discover the long history of Thessaloniki, founded in 315 BC and later an important city of both the Roman and Byzantine worlds.

See major landmarks including the White Tower, Roman Forum, Church of Saint Demetrius and Byzantine Walls.

Continue with a short walking tour to monuments associated with the Roman Emperor Galerius, including the Palace of Galerius and the Arch of Galerius.

Visit the Rotunda, originally constructed during the Roman period and later converted for Christian use. Its surviving Early Christian mosaics are among Thessaloniki’s most important works of late antique art.

Thessaloniki contains a remarkable group of Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

After the sightseeing tour, enjoy free time to explore the city center and waterfront at your own pace.

Day 6: Edessa – Mieza – Aigai (Vergina) – Veria

After breakfast, depart for a full-day journey through historical Macedonia.

Begin in Edessa, known for its impressive waterfalls, before continuing toward Naoussa and ancient Mieza.

Aristotle’s School at Mieza

Near Naoussa, visit the archaeological area traditionally associated with the School of Aristotle.

Ancient sources connect Aristotle with the education of the young Alexander the Great and other Macedonian nobles at Mieza. Modern archaeological research has identified important educational and public complexes in the area associated with this period.

Aigai – Vergina

Continue to Aigai, near modern Vergina, the first royal capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Aigai remained an important royal and ceremonial center even after the Macedonian capital was transferred to Pella.

Visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aigai, built around the royal burial complex beneath the Great Tumulus.

Among the most important discoveries is an unlooted royal tomb identified as that of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, together with exceptional grave goods and surviving ancient wall paintings.

The discovery of the royal tombs in 1977–1978 transformed modern understanding of ancient Macedonian history and archaeology.

Veria

Continue to Veria, ancient Beroea, a city associated with the travels of Saint Paul.

Visit Saint Paul’s Bema and walk through parts of the historic center, including the old Jewish Quarter and traditional market area.

Return to Thessaloniki.

Day 7: Pella – Archaeological Park of Dion – Thermopylae – Athens

After breakfast, travel to Pella, which became the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia and was the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

Explore the archaeological site and discover the remains of the ancient city, including luxurious residences known for their elaborate mosaic floors.

Continue to the Archaeological Museum of Pella, where finds from the ancient Macedonian capital provide insight into its political, economic and cultural importance.

Archaeological Park of Dion

Continue south to the Archaeological Park of Dion, situated at the foot of Mount Olympus.

Dion was one of the principal religious centers of ancient Macedonia and was closely associated with the worship of Olympian Zeus. Macedonian kings visited the sanctuary for sacrifices, festivals and important public ceremonies.

Explore remains of ancient sanctuaries, public buildings, baths, theatres and other monuments that reflect the long history of the city from the Macedonian period through Roman and Late Antique times.

Thermopylae & Return to Athens

After leaving Dion, begin the journey south through Thessaly and Lamia.

Make a short stop at Thermopylae to see the Monument of King Leonidas, commemorating the famous Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.

Continue toward Athens, arriving in the late afternoon.
