This 4-hour winter afternoon tour from Athens to Cape Sounion combines a scenic drive along the Athens Riviera with a guided visit to the ancient Temple of Poseidon.

Travel from Athens by air-conditioned coach with a professional licensed English-speaking guide. Follow the coastal road through the seaside areas of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza before reaching Cape Sounion, the southernmost point of Attica.

At Cape Sounion, enjoy a guided visit to the archaeological site and learn about the history of the Sanctuary of Poseidon and its importance to ancient Athens. Entrance fees to the archaeological site are included in the tour price.

Scenic Drive Along the Athens Riviera

Leave Athens and follow the coastal road toward Cape Sounion, passing through some of the best-known seaside areas of the Athens Riviera.

The route passes Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, with views of the coastline and the Saronic Gulf as the tour continues south through Attica.

These coastal areas are viewed from the coach during the journey; no scheduled stops are made before reaching Cape Sounion.

Cape Sounion & the Temple of Poseidon

Arrive at Cape Sounion, where the marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon stand on a rocky promontory overlooking the Aegean Sea.

The Temple of Poseidon visible today was built around 444–440 BC during the Classical period, on the foundations of an earlier Archaic temple that was destroyed during the Persian invasion of 480 BC.

The temple was the principal monument of the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Sounion. Its commanding position above the sea reflected the importance of Poseidon, god of the sea, to ancient Athens and to those travelling through the waters around Attica.

During the guided visit, learn about the sanctuary, its connection with ancient Athens, and the role of Poseidon in ancient Greek religion and mythology.

The site also attracted European travelers centuries later. The poet Lord Byron visited Sounion in 1810 and, like other travelers of the period, engraved his name on the ancient monument.

After the guided visit, enjoy free time at Cape Sounion to walk around the rocky promontory, take photographs, and admire the surrounding sea views.

The elevated position of the archaeological site offers wide views across the Aegean Sea and the southern coastline of Attica before the return journey to Athens.
